Atlanta has slipped in the rankings when it comes to being one of the most literate cities in
the United States, according to a recent study by Central Connecticut State University.
The report, which only measures the city of Atlanta and not the metro area, shows Atlanta
fell to No. 8, falling just behind other major cities such as Washington D.C., St. Louis and San
Francisco. Atlanta tied with Washington D.C. for No. 3 last year.
To create the rankings, the survey measures library holdings and usage, education levels,
number of bookstores, and reading of magazines, newspapers and the Internet to determine which
major cites (pop. 250,000 or more) are America’s most literate.
| City | 2007 Rank |
| Minneapolis, MN | 1 |
| Seattle, WA | 2 |
| St. Paul, MN | 3 |
| Denver, CO | 4 |
| Washington D.C. | 5 |
| St. Louis, MO | 6 |
| San Francisco, CA | 7 |
| Atlanta, GA | 8 |
| Pittsburgh, PA | 9 |
| Boston, MA | 10 |
Atlanta ranks No. 1 in using the Internet, such as reading newspapers online and using wireless Internet resources.
The most well-read city in the United States is Minneapolis, MN, according to the report, which looks at 69 major cities. Atlanta tied for 24th place in education levels.
